Filling system
Parker introduced the Aerometric filler on the 51 in 1948 and used it for decades. A clear sac made of Pli-Glass, a PVC plastic, sits inside a metal sleeve with a pressure bar. Unscrew the barrel, dip the nib and squeeze the bar a few times. Pli-Glass held up far better than the latex sacs of the time, and plenty of Aerometric 51s still fill on their original sac. Age still catches up with some, so ask whether the pen has been filled recently and whether the sac has been checked or replaced. It's the easiest vintage filler to live with, which is a big part of why Aerometric 51s are such popular first pens.
