Sheaffer · 1949 · Snorkel and Touchdown
1949 only, Touchdown filler
Sheaffer announced the Tuckaway in 1940 as a short pen you could drop into a trouser pocket or a purse. It's about four inches long capped, it had no clip at first, and every Tuckaway carried the White Dot. The first ones were lever fillers, with a Vacuum-Fil plunger version added in 1941. After the war it gained a tiny clasp near the cap lip and was sold mostly as a woman's pen. In 1949 Sheaffer replaced the Vac-Fil with its new Touchdown filler across the line, and the Tuckaway got it too. That was its last year, because the Tuckaway left the catalog in 1950 when the slimmer Touchdown TM arrived. So the Touchdown Tuckaway is a one-year pen. It came in several trims, including a Sentinel with a stainless steel cap, a Crest with a gold-filled cap and a plain plastic version with an open nib. It's the one to find if you collect Sheaffer fillers or want a vintage pen that fits a small pocket.
The Touchdown sac and seals have usually aged out and need replacing before the pen will fill. Most Tuckaways for sale are the earlier lever or Vac-Fil versions, so listings mix them up. Full-length pens sometimes wear a clipless Tuckaway cap, which makes a mismatched pen.
Buying guide
Only two of the 15 titles for sale name the Touchdown filler that makes this the one-year 1949 Tuckaway, and our pick is one of them, machoquatro's black White Dot pen at $85 delivered. Most Tuckaways are the earlier lever or Vac-Fil pens, and we left out titles that say Vac-Fil or plunger, so for the rest ask the seller to confirm the filler is a Touchdown with a photo of it pulled out. Most complete pens ask $85–210 delivered, and an unrestored Touchdown needs a new sac and seals before it fills, so ask for a water test. Skip the $359 pen, which asks about $150 over the band top.
$75.00est. delivered
The lowest price on a complete Tuckaway at $75 delivered, in burgundy. The title doesn't name the filler and its 1940-50 date covers all three, so ask for a photo of the plunger before you count on a Touchdown.
SHEAFFER SA TUCKAWAY BURGUNDY COLOR, 1940-50. 4 1/8 IN HES LONG.(S1293)
$85.24est. delivered
One of only two titles that name the Touchdown filler, with a two-tone 14K nib, at $85 delivered, the bottom of the band. Ask whether the sac and seals have been replaced, and check the cap lip for cracks in the photos.
Vtg Sheaffer Tuckaway Touchdown Two-Tone 14k Nib White Dot Black Fountain Pen
$219.98est. delivered
A Sentinel Tuckaway, the version with a stainless steel cap, titled 1949, the only year with the Touchdown filler. At $220 delivered it's about $10 over the band, so confirm the filler with a photo of the plunger pulled out, since the title doesn't name it.
