Sheaffer · 1976–1998 · Cartridge and converter
Matte black, gold-plated trim, Classic size
Sheaffer brought out the Targa in 1976 and named it after the Targa Florio, the old road race through the hills of Sicily. It's a sleek metal pen with the inlaid nib from the PFM, and it fills from a cartridge or a converter. Over more than two decades Sheaffer dressed it in over 70 finishes, and collectors identify each one by its catalog number. The 1003 is matte black with gold-plated trim and a gold nib. Its plainer sibling, the 1002, has the same black with chrome trim and a steel nib. Collector Gary Ellison's reference list dates the Classic 1003 to 1980, with a later version from 1990 and a Slim 1003s from 1982. Richard Binder calls the Targa arguably the best Sheaffer since the PFM and says most are superb writers. A 1003 is an understated everyday pen with a gold nib, and plenty of them come up for sale.
Targas are durable, so most trouble is cosmetic, like rubbed spots in the matte finish or worn plating on the trim. Many turn up without a converter. Classic and Slim nib units differ in length, so check that the nib belongs to the pen.
Buying guide
Our pick is the matte black 1003 with a 14K fine inlaid nib at $111 delivered, at the bottom of the band, from a seller in Japan. There are 11 for sale, most asking $110–200 delivered, and the ones with a box or case ask $117–177. Targas are durable, so check the photos for shiny rubbed patches in the matte finish at the cap lip and clip, and make sure gold trim comes with a gold nib, since chrome trim and a steel nib mean a 1002. Many turn up without a converter, so price one in, and skip the $239 pens from Indonesia, which ask about $40 over the band top.

The lowest price on a 1003 at about $77 delivered, in matte black. The title doesn't give the nib or mention a converter, so ask, and price one in if it's missing.
