Model M-350SS, integral steel nib
Pilot announced the MYU 701 on April 1, 1971, under the model number M-350SS. It's a pocket pen, short enough to disappear in a shirt pocket, that writes at a comfortable length once you post the cap. The nib is what makes it special. It's formed as part of the brushed stainless steel body, so there's no separate nib to swap. Early pens had urushi-lacquered feeds, which Pilot soon replaced with plastic ones that have held up better. A dressier MYU 500BS added etched grooves filled with black enamel. The name nods to Japan's Mu rocket program. The MYU sold poorly at home when it was new, and Pilot kept making it until 1980. In 2008 Pilot brought the idea back as the M90, a limited run of 9,000 pens. It's the pick for someone who loves 1970s industrial design and wants a pen that still looks like the future.
Because the nib is part of the body, a bent or damaged tip can't be fixed by fitting a new nib. Restorers say the MYU is a poor candidate for home repair, especially early pens with the fragile urushi-covered feed.
Buying guide
Our pick is a fine-nib 701 titled tested at $235 delivered, the bottom of the $230–360 band most of the 28 listed fall in, and an untested one asks as little as $178. The nib is part of the steel body and can't be replaced, so zoom in on the tip for bent or uneven tines and favor pens titled tested. Many titles say only "Pilot Myu", and a brushed steel pen with an integrated nib is probably a 701, but check the imprint for 701 or M-350SS before you pay a 701 price. We left out the matte black Myu 25 and the Myu Rex, which are different pens.
$90.50est. delivered
The lowest current price at about $91 delivered, a fine-nib 701 the title dates to December 1979, from a US seller. It had 9 bids and a day left at capture, so it will climb, and we'd stop around $180 delivered, since a titled 701 asks $178 with free shipping.
vtg Steel CT Pilot Myu 701 Fountain Pen - F Nib - Dec 1979
$177.99delivered
The cheapest fixed-price pen titled 701, at $178 delivered with free shipping from Japan, under the band. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a close photo of the nib tip, since a damaged integral nib can't be swapped.
PILOT Myu 701 FM Fountain Pen, Integrated, Silver Color
$235.00delivered
Titled tested, with a fine nib, at $235 delivered, the bottom of the band. A tested pen matters more on a Myu than on most pens, since the nib can't be replaced if it's damaged.
Pilot MYU 701 Vintage Fountain Pen Tested Stainless Steel Integrated F Nib Japan
$342.56est. delivered
Titled 1971 with an H971 code, which reads as September 1971 by Pilot's month-and-year nib code, the Myu's first year. Early pens had urushi-lacquered feeds that restorers call fragile, so ask which feed it has before you pay $343 delivered.

Our take
Black stripe, titled tested, but the cap doesn't close, which lets the nib dry out.
