Celluloid, 1950s
The 144 was the smaller sibling of the 146 in Montblanc's 1950s Meisterstück line. Owners who have both say it's about the same length as a 1950s 146 but thinner, so it's slimmer than a Parker 51 or a Pelikan 400. It's built like the bigger pens, with a celluloid body, a screw cap, a striped ink window, a two-tone 14C nib and the two-stage telescopic piston sealed with cork. Most are black. Export pens read Masterpiece on the cap band. Don't confuse it with the later cartridge 144, eventually sold as the Classique, which shares the number but has a push-on cap. The 1950s nibs are much loved, and owners report everything from soft fines to oblique broads. It suits smaller hands, or anyone who wants a celluloid Meisterstück that slips into a shirt pocket, as long as they treat the old celluloid gently.
Like the 146, the celluloid shrinks, so cap-lip cracks and loose cap bands turn up often. The cork seal on the telescopic piston dries out, and getting to it means warming off a brittle celluloid section.
Buying guide
The buy is a black 144 with the nib grade you want, from one of the German or US sellers with near-perfect feedback, at about $720 to $800 delivered. Only 11 are listed and most ask $725–1,050 delivered, with nib grade and color setting the price and the two green ones asking $1,110 and up. None is titled serviced, so ask whether the cork piston seal has been replaced and get a close photo of the cap lip, where shrinking celluloid cracks. Several titles say flex, which on these often just means soft, so ask for a writing sample before you pay extra for it.

Green Tiger Eye celluloid is the color to find on a 144, since most are black, and this 144G has an oblique OB nib too. It asks about $370 over the band, which is the price of the color, so it only makes sense if green is what you're after.
