$499.00est. delivered
At $499 delivered it asks less than half what the other 146s do, and the title says only celluloid and EF. Ask for photos of the cap lip, section and nib stamp, and ask why it's priced so low.
Montblanc 146 celluloid EF
Montblanc · c. 1950–early 1960s · Piston
Celluloid, 1950s
The 1950s 146 is a different pen from the resin 146 Montblanc has sold since the 1970s. It's noticeably smaller, with a curved hourglass section, a striped ink window and a celluloid body. Most are black, and there are striated green and gray ones too. Inside is a two-stage telescopic piston sealed with cork. Montblanc was one of several German makers to patent nested piston screws like this, which give a longer stroke and more ink. The nib is two-tone 14C gold, and many are soft and springy, though not every one. Export pens read Masterpiece on the cap band instead of Meisterstück. Montblanc dropped the 146 in the 1960s and brought it back in plastic in the early 1970s. Collectors prize the celluloid ones for the material, the telescopic filler and the nibs. It suits someone who wants a mid-size 1950s pen to use with care, and who's happy to have the cork seal serviced.

Celluloid shrinks with age, and cracked or split cap lips are common. The cork piston seal dries out, and replacing it means taking off a celluloid section that can break if it's forced or overheated.
Buying guide
Buy a 146 with a stated 14C nib grade from a seller with near-perfect feedback, which here means about $1,300 to $1,600 delivered. Only five are listed, so the $1,275–1,625 band isn't much of a market read, and the $499 extra-fine needs questions before it's a bargain. Check the photos for the curved hourglass section and striped ink window of the 1950s pen, and ask for a close shot of the cap lip, since shrinking celluloid cracks there. None is titled serviced, so ask whether the cork piston seal has been replaced.
