Black, old-style trim, before 1997
Pelikan added the M800 to the Souverän line in 1987, starting with green stripes, and the solid black version followed a year or two later. It's a size up from the M400, and the bigger change is inside. The M800 and the later M1000 have a brass piston assembly, which gives them real heft without making them heavy pens. The first M800s had 14-carat two-tone nibs, and by the early 1990s Pelikan had moved to 18-carat two-tone gold, so a 1995 pen should carry the 18-carat nib. It's also an old-style pen from before the 1997 trim change, with a brass jewel on the cap top and the two-chick logo cut into it. After 1997 the logo was printed, and in 2003 the pelican lost a chick. Black is the plainest M800 and plenty were made, so you can be choosy about nib and condition. It's a full-size pen for someone who writes a lot.
The piston is the part to test, since a stiff or weepy one needs a clean and fresh grease or a new seal. Scratches show up plainly on a black barrel and on the cap-top jewel, and old-style and new-style parts sometimes get mixed.
Buying guide
Our pick is a black M800 with an 18C medium nib at $460 delivered, under the $500–750 band most of the 17 listed ask and about $130 less than the unused current-model black one here. For a 1995 pen look for an 18-carat two-tone nib and a brass cap-top jewel with the two-chick pelican cut into it. Most of these ship from Japan with $70 to $100 shipping, so compare delivered prices, and ask whether the piston turns smoothly and holds ink. Skip the green pen at $1,930 delivered, about $1,180 over the band.
$450.00delivered
The lowest price on an M800 at $450 delivered, in black with gold trim and a medium nib, and it comes with a box. The title doesn't give the nib's karat, so ask for a close-up, since a mid-1990s pen should have an 18-carat two-tone nib.

Black with an 18C medium nib, the nib a mid-1990s M800 should have, at $460 delivered including $70 shipping from Japan. Ask for photos of the cap-top jewel and the barrel imprint to date it.

Green stripes came first on the M800, and the first pens had 14-carat nibs, so this green one with a 14K 585 medium nib points to the late 1980s. At $750 delivered it's at the top of the band, a fair price for an early pen.
