Montblanc · 1952–present · Piston
Precious resin, 1980s
The 149 is Montblanc's biggest Meisterstück, and it's kept close to the same cigar shape since 1952. The number isn't its length. In Montblanc's code the 1 means the top line, the 4 a piston filler and the 9 the nib size. By the 1980s the celluloid of the 1950s was long gone, and the barrel was the black plastic Montblanc calls precious resin. The walls had been thickened in the 1970s, which made them much less prone to cracking. A typical 1980s pen has a two-tone 14C nib stamped 4810, the height of Mont Blanc in meters, while pens for France got 18C gold. The clip ring reads W.-Germany with no serial number, because serials only arrived around 1990, and every 149 moved to 18K nibs in the early 1990s. Many owners prefer these older nibs to today's. It suits anyone who wants a big classic piston filler that's tough enough to use every day.
Mixed-year parts are common, such as a 1970s nib and feed fitted to a late-1980s body. Decades of use leave bent or reground nibs and feeds with broken fins. Fakes exist, and the convincing ones copy the 149's look closely, so the nib and threads matter more than the star.
Buying guide
The buy is a 1970s or 1980s 149 with a 14C two-tone nib from a seller with near-perfect feedback, and $630 to $770 delivered gets you one titled serviced or one titled 1970s, inside the $525–775 band most of the 29 listed fall in. We left out six silver barley, army green and gold 149s, most asking $129–159, as likely fakes, and anything far under the $450 cheapest one here deserves the same suspicion. On a real one, look for 4810 and 14C or 585 on a two-tone nib and W.-Germany on the clip ring, and compare the threads and nib with a known-good 149, since the convincing fakes copy the star.
$450.00delivered
The lowest delivered complete 149 here at $450, with a 14C 585 nib and a seller in the US. The title gives no nib grade or decade, so ask for photos of the nib stamp and clip ring and a full turn of the piston.

$768.00delivered
Also titled serviced, so it should be ready to ink. The 18K tri-color nib is newer than the 1980s 14C two-tone, so ask whether the clip ring reads W.-Germany, and only buy it if you want a double-broad line.

$768.00delivered
Titled 1970s, with a 14C two-tone medium nib on an ebonite feed, the older nibs many owners prefer to today's 18K. At $768 delivered it's still inside the band.

The title says the nib is damaged, and the nib is the costly part on a 149, so treat this as a body and piston with a nib to fix or replace. It's the only 149 here under $450 delivered.
