The first Pelikan, celluloid barrel
This is where Pelikan fountain pens begin. The Günther Wagner company of Hannover, known for its paints and inks, bought the rights to a differential piston filler patented by Hungarian engineer Theodor Kovács, and it launched its first fountain pen in 1929. Collectors know it as the 100. The first pens had a Bakelite barrel, and by mid-1931 Pelikan had moved to celluloid and given the cap a conical top, so a 1932 pen has both. Green marbled is the color German buyers usually got, while export pens came in red, blue, gray and other marbles. The cap carries the old pelican with four chicks, used until 1937, and the 14-carat nib is stamped for Günther Wagner. The piston seal is cork, which Pelikan used until 1942. The larger 100N arrived in 1937, and the two were sold side by side until 1944. It's a pen for collectors who want the very first Pelikan.
A cork seal this old has usually dried out, so expect the pen to need resealing before it holds ink. Parts from the 100 and 100N get mixed, and a palladium or steel nib on an early-1930s pen is a later replacement.
Buying guide
Our pick is a marbled 100 titled restored at $525 delivered, near the top of the $400–550 band most of the 10 we kept ask. One Berlin dealer lists 28 more 100s, mostly asking $520–920 delivered, on top of the three we kept. The cork piston seal on an unrestored pen has usually dried out, so price one as needing a reseal, and check the photos for a conical cap top with a four-chick pelican and a 14-carat nib, since a palladium (Pd) or steel (CN) nib on an early-1930s pen is a later replacement. Skip the $1,379 pen, which asks about $830 over the band with no reason given.
