The lowest price on an M1000 at $656 delivered, a used pen with an 18K broad nib from a US seller. The title says nothing else, so ask for photos of the cap top, the section ring and the nib.
pelikan m1000 18k B fountain pen
Pelikan · 1997–present · Piston
Black, two-chick logo, 1997 to 2003
The M1000 joined the Souverän line in 1997, the same year Pelikan restyled the trim across its pens, and it's been the biggest regular Souverän ever since. Like the M800, it has a brass piston assembly, which gives it a weight you notice the moment you pick it up. The nib is 18-carat gold and large to match the pen. A 2001 pen sits between two logo changes. Its cap top has the painted two-chick pelican Pelikan used from 1997, and the one-chick logo didn't arrive until 2003. Black has been made since launch, and green stripes are the other regular color. At about 14.6 cm capped it's a big pen, and it suits large hands and long sessions at a desk better than a shirt pocket. If the M800 already feels right to you, the M1000 is the step up for more pen and more nib.

Souverän pens made after 1997 have a trim ring at the section that's known to corrode. A stiff or weepy piston is the other thing to check, and scratches show plainly on a black barrel.
Buying guide
Our pick is a new black M1000 with an extra-fine nib at $673 delivered, which undercuts every used one here but one. Most of the 26 listed are used pens from Japan asking $900–1,200 delivered, so only pay that for a pen you can date to 1997–2002 by the painted two-chick pelican on the cap top, since the one-chick logo arrived in 2003. On any used M1000, check the photos for pitting or green on the gold ring by the grip section, which is known to corrode, and ask whether the piston turns smoothly. Skip the $1,898 pen with a one-line title, about $700 over the band.

$672.90delivered
A new black M1000 with an extra-fine nib at $673 delivered, $17 more than the cheapest used one and well under what used pens from Japan ask. Buy this one to write with, and a used one only if you want the two-chick logo of a 1997–2002 pen.
Pelikan M1000 Fountain Pen Souverän Black EF 987370

$1,099.99delivered
Black with an oblique broad nib, a collector favorite, titled unused, at $1,100 delivered, inside the band. Ask for a close-up of the cap top, since a painted two-chick pelican would date it to 1997–2002.
