Steel nib, old-style trim, 1985 to 1997
The M200 arrived in 1985, three years after Pelikan relaunched the M400, as part of a wider wave of modern piston pens. It's the same size as the M400 and fills the same way, with a piston you turn from the end of the barrel. The difference is the nib, which is gold-plated stainless steel, and that puts the pen in Pelikan's Classic line below the gold-nibbed Souveräns. Steel doesn't mean stiff here, because Pelikan's Classic nibs are known for a springy feel. The first M200s were black, and the marbled blue, gray and green colors came from 1988, so a 1985 pen should be plain black. Early pens wear the old-style trim, with a derby cap top, two cap bands and no ring at the piston knob. Pelikan switched to a crown cap top and a single band in 1997. It's the least expensive way into a real Pelikan piston filler, and a good test of whether the M400 shape suits your hand.
The gold plating on the steel nib can wear thin, and a stiff or weepy piston is the usual mechanical complaint. Later colors and the chrome-trimmed M205 turn up under the same name, so check the pen matches the year you're after.
Buying guide
Our pick is an old-style black M200 with a medium steel nib at $131 delivered, under the $140–250 band most of the 27 listed ask. A new black M200 asks $109 delivered here, and eight of the 27 are listed as new, so a used later pen should cost less than new, and only the old style is worth more. Look for a derby cap top, two cap bands and no ring at the piston knob, a plain black barrel for a 1985 pen, and a steel nib with no karat mark. Skip the marbled green pen at $380 delivered, about $130 over the band.
