Pelikan · 1985–present · Piston
Old-style, M400-sized, 1985 to 1997
Pelikan launched the M600 in 1985 as a dressed-up M400, with an 18-carat nib and extra trim. Until 1997 it was the same size as the M400, and you tell the two apart by the trim. The M600 adds a gold ring on the piston knob, another at the grip section and a second band on the cap. A 1992 pen comes from that old-style run. It should have the 18-carat two-tone nib Pelikan fitted from 1990, and the regular colors by then were black, burgundy and green stripes. In 1997 Pelikan restyled the trim on all its pens, and the M600 is the only one that changed size, so the newer version is noticeably bigger and comes with a 14-carat nib. Sellers rarely say which one they have. The old style suits someone who likes the M400's size but wants the fancier nib and trim. If you want more pen in the hand, look for a post-1997 M600 instead.
Old-style and new-style M600s share a name, and listings often don't say which is which, so a photo next to a ruler matters. A stiff or weepy piston is the usual mechanical fault.
Buying guide
Our pick is a US-listed M600 titled old style, with a medium nib, at $305 delivered, under the $350–525 band most of the 16 listed ask. Sellers rarely say which M600 they have, and the nib is the quickest tell, since a 1992 pen should carry an 18-carat two-tone nib and the bigger pen made since 1997 has a 14-carat one. Half the pens here are titled 14C or 14K, so for the old style ask for a photo next to a ruler, since the newer pen is noticeably bigger, and a close-up of the two-chick pelican on the cap top. Pass on the custom-ground nib unless you want a cursive italic line.
$299.99delivered
The lowest price on an M600 at $300 delivered, with a 14C fine nib. A 14-carat nib usually means the bigger pen made since 1997, so ask for a photo next to a ruler if you want the old style.

$305.00est. delivered
Titled old style, with a medium nib, at $305 delivered, $5 more than the cheapest M600 and well under the band. Ask for a close-up of the nib to confirm an 18-carat two-tone mark and a photo of the two-chick pelican on the cap top.
Pelikan old style m600 Medium fountain pen
$485.80est. delivered
An old-style black M600 with an 18-carat two-tone oblique broad nib, a collector favorite, at $486 delivered, inside the band. The title dates it to the 1980s, so ask for the barrel imprint, which should read W.-Germany on a pen that old.
