Pilot 78G
The 78G is one of Pilot's inexpensive fountain pens, a plain writer that makes a sensible first fountain pen or a spare for the desk. It fills from Pilot's own cartridges, which aren't the standard international size, so a used one is only as handy as the Pilot cartridges or converter you can find for it. Pilot's date codes help with age. Many Pilot nibs carry a small stamp of month and two-digit year, with a factory letter in front on pens made before 2010, so you can check a seller's dating against the nib itself. If you'd rather buy new, Pilot's current entry-level pen is the Metropolitan, which arrived in 2012. A used 78G is an easy, low-risk way to try a Japanese nib before you spend more on a Custom 74 or a Capless.

What to check before you buy
The usual problems on any inexpensive used pen apply here, a nib knocked out of line by a drop and a missing converter. Dried ink in a pen that's sat for years can also block the feed until it's flushed.
- 01Nib tip: Zoom in on the nib in the photos. Both tines should be straight and level at the tip.
- 02Filling: Check whether a converter or cartridges are included. It takes Pilot's own cartridges, not standard international ones.
